چکیده

The COBE-DMR 4-year maps displayed a strong non-Gaussian signal in the “interscale” components of the bispectrum: their observed values did not display the scatter expected from Gaussian maps. We re-examine this and other suggested non-Gaussian features in the light of WMAP. We find that they all disappear. Given that it was proved that COBE-DMR high noise levels and documented systematics could at most dilute the observed non-Gaussian features, we conclude that this dataset must have contained non-negligible undocumented systematic errors. It turns out that the culprit is a combination of QuadCube pixelization and data collected during the “eclipse season”.

First Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (wmap) Observations: Tests of Gaussianity

We present limits to the amplitude of non-Gaussian primordial fluctuations in the WMAP 1-year cosmic microwave background sky maps. A non-linear coupling parameter, fNL, characterizes the amplitude of a quadratic term in the primordial potential. We use two statistics: one is a cubic statistic which measures phase correlations of temperature fluctuations after combining all configurations of th...

The complete bispectrum of COBE-DMR Four Year Maps

We extend a previous bispectrum analysis of the COBE-DMR 4 year maps, allowing for the presence of correlations between all possible angular scales. We find that the non-Gaussian signal found earlier for bispectrum components including adjacent modes does not extend to triplets of modes with larger separations. Indeed for all separations ∆l > 1 we find that the COBE-DMR data is very Gaussian. T...

Cubic anomalies in WMAP

We perform a frequentist analysis of the bispectrum of WMAP first year data. We find clear signal domination up to l ≈ 200, with overall consistency with Gaussianity, except for the following features. There is a flat patch (i.e. a low χ region) in the same-l components of the bispectrum spanning the range l = 32 − 62; this may be interpreted as ruling out Gaussianity at the 99.6% confidence le...

Contributions of Point Extragalactic Sources to the Cosmic Microwave Background Bispectrum

All the analyses of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature maps up–to–date show that CMB anisotropies follow a Gaussian distribution. On the other hand, astrophysical foregrounds which hamper the detection of the CMB angular power spectrum, are not Gaussian distributed on the sky. Therefore, they should give a sizeable contribution to the CMB bispectrum. In fact, the first year data of t...

v 2 7 M ar 1 99 4 The Angular Bispectrum of The Cosmic Microwave

COBE has provided us with a whole-sky map of the CBR anisotropies. However, even if the noise level is negligible when the four year COBE data are available, the cosmic variance will prevent us from obtaining information about the Gaussian nature of the primordial fluctuations. This important issue is addressed here by studying the angular bispectrum of the cosmic microwave background anisotrop...
